BUT WE ARE SEEING A HUGE PAYOFF. AND SO NOW IT'S BECOME A CAMPUS MISSION TO TEACH THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING.

SO IT'S KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THIRD GRADE. IS THE SHIFT IN INSTRUCTION.

AND WHAT IS IT? WELL, BASICALLY IT'S EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION.

SO IT'S SYSTEMIC AND EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION. SO OUR STUDENTS ARE PREPARED FOR READING.

AND SO WE WENT FROM KIND OF HAPHAZARD TEACHING.

GOOD AFTERNOON. THIS TREE REPRESENTS THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING FROM A HOLISTIC VIEW.

SO WHAT WE'VE NOTICED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WITH THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING IS THAT STUDENTS WERE PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED BECAUSE OF STRUGGLES WITH FLUENCY AND COMPREHENSION, AND THOSE STRUGGLES WERE OFTEN LOOKED AT HIGHER LEVEL DEFICITS WHEN REALLY THE TRUE ISSUE IS WEAK PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS. SO IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE TREE, WE REALLY ARE FOCUSING ON THE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS THAT ARE REALLY THE ROOT OF READING. READING ITSELF IS NOT AN AUTOMATIC SKILL.

IT HAS TO BE TAUGHT. SO WHAT WE ARE REALIZING IS THAT UNDER A PHONOLOGICAL UMBRELLA, IF WE CAN TARGET OUR FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS, THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO TARGET READING IN THE TIER ONE CLASSROOM.

SO IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS UMBRELLA, IT STARTS AS LOW AS WORD LEVEL WITH RHYMING AND ALLITERATION AND SENTENCE SEGMENTATION FOLLOWED BY SYLLABLE LEVELS ONTO UNCENSORED RHYME AND PHONEMIC AWARENESS.

SO WHAT WE'RE REALIZING IS THAT AS WE TEACH THE PHONOLOGICAL UMBRELLA, IT IS NOW WIDER AND LESS KIDS ARE GETTING WET, AND SO THEY'RE NOT LOSING AS AS MUCH INSTRUCTION.

THE UMBRELLA IS MORE ALIGNED WITH HOW THE BASIC BRAIN LEARNS TO READ.

SO THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING REDUCES COGNITIVE OVERLOAD.

BUILDS AUTOMATICITY AND DECODING AND FREES UP MEMORY FOR COMPREHENSION.

AS A RESULT, STUDENTS PROGRESS MORE EFFICIENTLY AND DON'T STALL IN THE EARLY GRADES, WHICH HISTORICALLY HAS INFLATED INTERVENTION NUMBERS.

TEACHERS CAN IDENTIFY WHICH SKILLS THAT ARE MISSING AND TARGET SHORT.

SORRY I'M SO NERVOUS. [LAUGHTER] I'VE BEEN TEACHING READING FOR A LONG TIME AND I'M LIKE, I'M GOING TO FORGET EVERYTHING THERE IS ABOUT READING WHEN I GET UP HERE.

BUT BASICALLY FEWER STUDENTS ARE MISIDENTIFIED BECAUSE WE'RE CATCHING THOSE PHONOLOGICAL SKILLS AT AN EARLIER AGE.

I'LL TALK TO SIX AND SEVEN YEAR OLDS ALL DAY, BUT PUT ME IN FRONT OF ADULTS.

[LAUGHTER] SO AS A FIRST GRADE TEACHER, I WISH THAT I COULD GO BACK AND RETEACH THE KIDS THAT I HAD BEFORE THIS. IT'S KIND OF EMBARRASSING, BUT I MEAN, YOU KNOW, THAT'S HOW IT WAS.

AND SO BEFORE TEACHING THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING, READING, GUIDED READING, I CHOSE THE SKILL IN THE DECODABLE READER.

WE WOULD READ IT, DISCUSS IT, TEACH ANY UNFAMILIAR WORDS, DO THE WORD WORK PRACTICE.

WE WERE TAUGHT TO IDENTIFY UNFAMILIAR WORDS BY USING THESE SOME OF THESE STRATEGIES OVER HERE AND LIKE EAGLE EYE, LIPS THE FISH, STRETCHY THE SNAKE, CHUNKY MONKEY.

AND BASICALLY THAT'S WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE IN YOUR READING GROUPS.

AND SO WE DID DRILLS HOW TO MEMORIZE WORDS. LET'S DO A PICTURE WALK.

YOU KNOW, ALL THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE GREAT. BUT THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING HAS REALLY CHANGED FOCUS IN OUR CLASSROOMS. AND I HAVE SEEN A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN MY CLASS.

JUST MAKING SURE THAT EVERY CHILD HAS A FOUNDATION, THE PHONICS FOUNDATION.

SO YOU KNOW OKAY, SO NOW FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS ARE TAUGHT IN A STRUCTURED AND SYSTEMATIC WAY, LIKE KELLIE SAID.

AND BASICALLY THIS IS TO ENSURE MASTERY OF BASIC CONCEPTS.

SO WHEN THEY LEAVE FIRST GRADE, MY GOAL IS TO HAVE A SOLID FOUNDATION IS FOR THEM TO HAVE A SOLID FOUNDATION BEFORE MOVING ON.

SO LIKE IF WE'RE DOING A PARTICULAR SOUND, SOMETIMES A CHILD WILL BE SAYING, BUT IT'S NOT.

TONIGHT WE WANT TO GIVE YOU A QUICK PEEK INSIDE OUR CLASSROOM AND SHARE HOW WE BUILD STRONG READERS FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, USING THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING. IN KINDERGARTEN, READING SUCCESS STARTS WITH PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS THE ABILITY TO HEAR, IDENTIFY, AND MANIPULATE SOUNDS IN SPOKEN LANGUAGE.

ONE OF OUR MOST POWERFUL TOOLS FOR TEACHING THIS IS A DAILY SYSTEMATIC AND KINESTHETIC PHONICS ROUTINE CALLED HEGGERTY.

THERE ARE THREE KEY BENEFITS TO THIS ROUTINE THAT I'D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU.

FIRST IS STUDENT ENGAGEMENT. HEGGERTY IS FAST PACED, INTERACTIVE AND JOYFUL.

STUDENTS ARE CLAPPING, TAPPING, MOVING, LISTENING AND RESPONDING TOGETHER.

BECAUSE THE ROUTINE IS PREDICTABLE AND ACTIVE, STUDENTS ARE EXCITED TO PARTICIPATE AND THEY CAN REMAIN ENGAGED IN THE INSTRUCTION.

SECOND IS STRONG PARENT COMMUNICATION. EACH DAY, ONE STUDENT IS CHOSEN AS OUR HEGGERTY HERO FOR OUTSTANDING PARTICIPATION AND EFFORT DURING THE LESSON, THAT STUDENT BRINGS HOME A NOTE WHICH YOU CAN SEE HERE CELEBRATING THEIR SUCCESS, AND THEY ALSO GET TO HOLD THE HEGGERTY HIPPO.

THIS CREATES A POSITIVE HOME AND SCHOOL CONNECTION, REINFORCES THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY LITERACY, AND HELPS FAMILIES SEE EXACTLY HOW LEARNING IS HAPPENING IN OUR CLASSROOM.

AND THIS CHART SHOWS THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THIRD GRADE OVER THE YEARS AND HOW THE IMPACT OF STR HAS REDUCED OUR NUMBER OF TIER THREE STUDENTS. SO YOU CAN SEE THAT IN 2019, 2020, THAT WAS WAY BEFORE NONE OF US EVEN HAD THE TRAINING. 2020 2021 WE STARTED THE TRAINING THAT YEAR AND THEN 21-22 WE WERE IMPLEMENTING. SO YOU ALREADY SAW A QUICK DIVE DOWN IN THE TIER THREE NUMBERS.

AND THIS IS DESPITE THE NUMBERS AT DSE. WE WENT FROM 1000 TO MAYBE 921 WHEN CYPRESS OPENED.

SO THIS IS JUST THE PERCENTAGE. AND THEN YOU CAN SEE AFTER FULL IMPLEMENTATION AND REALLY BUYING THE RESOURCES SUCH AS SOUND WALLS AND HEGGERTY, THEN IT HAS REALLY MADE AN IMPACT. A LITTLE BIT OF A SHIFT.

WE HAD A 1% INCREASE SO FAR THIS SCHOOL YEAR, BUT OUR ENROLLMENT WENT DOWN, BUT OUR DEMOGRAPHICS SHIFTED A LITTLE BIT JUST BECAUSE WE DIDN'T INCREASE OUR NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN EMERGENT BILINGUAL OR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED.

BUT OUR PERCENTAGE DID GO UP WHEN WE LOST SOME STUDENTS.

DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? SO A LITTLE BIT OF A SHIFT THERE.

BUT IT IS DEFINITELY MAKING AN IMPACT. AND WE SEE IT IN OUR READERS.

AND THEN ONE MORE SLIDE. THIS IS WE IMPLEMENTED A NEW ASSESSMENT LAST YEAR CALLED MAP FLUENCY.

SO IT'S FROM NWEA AND OUR FIRST AND SECOND GRADERS TAKE IT.

AND SO IN FIRST GRADE THEY'RE EXPECTED TO MASTER THE FOUNDATIONAL LEVELS OF READING.

AND THEN THEY MOVE INTO SENTENCE FLUENCY. SO NOW THEY'RE APPLYING IT AND THEY ARE RECORDED.

THEY READ INTO A MICROPHONE. AND THEN THE TEACHER CAN GO AND HEAR THEIR READING AND CAN INTERVENE IN ANY WAY THAT THEY NEED TO SEE HOW THEY ARE APPLYING THEIR READING SKILLS. SO IN THE FALL, WE HAD 43% OF OUR STUDENTS IN SECOND GRADE THAT WERE ALREADY MEETING OR EXCEEDING THE SENTENCE FLUENCY STANDARD, AND WE'VE ALREADY GONE UP IN WINTER TO 62%.

SO THE GOAL IS BY THE END OF THE YEAR THAT THAT GROWTH CONTINUES.

SO IT IS ALL ABOUT THE GROWTH BECAUSE WE KNOW IF THEY CAN DECODE AND THEY CAN HAVE LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION, THEY CAN READ. AND THEN WE HAVE A FRIEND THAT'S GOING TO ASK YOU A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.

REAL QUICK BEFORE YOU ASK US SOME QUESTIONS BOARD MEMBERS DO WE HAVE ANY COMMENTS FOR THEM? ACTUALLY I HAVE A QUESTION. IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE HAD A KINDERGARTNER.

SO WE TEACH THOSE AS HEART WORDS. THERE ARE SOME WORDS LIKE SAID S A I D THAT YOU JUST HAVE TO MEMORIZE.

THEN WE HAD STATE MONDAY, TUESDAY, AND THEN THE NEXT WEEK WE WENT TO INDIANAPOLIS FOR THE BANDS OF AMERICA GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

WHILE THAT WAS A LOT IN ABOUT THREE AND A HALF WEEKS WE WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL.

FIRST TIME MAKING OUR SAN ANTONIO SUPER REGIONAL FINALS.

AND WE'VE GONE SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST 23 YEARS, BUT THIS THE FIRST TIME WE'VE MADE THAT FINALS.

THEN SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE ACTUALLY MADE THE UIL STATE FINALS 6A.

AND THAT'S THE FIRST TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY WE'VE BEEN IN 6A AS A DISTRICT FOR FOUR YEARS NOW, FOURTH YEAR. AND WE QUALIFIED FOR STATE ALL OF THOSE YEARS.

BUT THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR THAT WE ACTUALLY MADE IT TO THE FINALS, WHICH MEANS OUT OF 264, 6A SCHOOLS WE WERE IN THE TOP 12. SO SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

THEN WE GOT TO GET ON A PLANE AND GO TO CHICAGO.

WE SPENT A COUPLE OF HOURS REALLY KIND OF LIKE AN AFTERNOON.

WE GOT TO GO TO EITHER THE FIELD MUSEUM OR THE SHEDD AQUARIUM.

AND THEN WE HAD DINNER AT GIORDANO'S. IF ANYBODY KNOWS.

DEEP DISH CHICAGO PIZZA. AND IT GOT CHILLY. IT WAS A GOOD REMINDER WHY I DON'T LIVE THERE ANYMORE.

[LAUGHTER] AND THEN WE GOT ON BUSSES, GOT DOWN TO INDIANAPOLIS.

INDIANAPOLIS IS A THREE COMPETITION OPPORTUNITY PRELIMINARIES, SEMIFINALS AND THEN FINALS.

WE DID GO TO THE SAME CONTEST IN 2023, AND WE MADE IT TO THE SEMIFINALS.

SO WE WERE IN THE TOP 15 OUT OF THE OVER 100 BANDS THAT WERE AT THAT COMPETITION FROM ALL LITERALLY ALL OVER THE NATION THIS YEAR WE NOT ONLY MADE SEMIFINALS, BUT WE ALSO MADE FINALS, SO WE WERE NINTH OUT OF 12 IN THE NATION.

SO THE MEDALS THAT THE KIDS ARE WEARING RIGHT NOW, THAT'S FROM THAT TIME.

I WASN'T GOING TO HAVE THEM INTRODUCE THEMSELVES BECAUSE I FIGURED WE'D HAVE A LOT OF KIDS, BUT I THINK WE CAN HEAR FROM THEM.

THIS YEAR'S THEME WAS AI AND ROBOTICS. AND HOW DO WE USE AI AND HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT THAT AND IMPROVE UPON IT? AND SO THAT WAS OUR CHALLENGE. WE COMPETED AT A HUB COMPETITION HERE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL THE SATURDAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING BREAK.

SO INSTEAD OF STARTING BREAK, THEY WERE COMPETING ON SATURDAY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.

AND WITH THAT, WE WON SIX AWARDS AT THAT COMPETITION.

AND BECAUSE WE WON THOSE AWARDS, WE WERE ABLE TO ADVANCE TO STATE FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, WHICH WAS THE SECOND YEAR I'VE EVER BEEN TO STATE WITH THEM. AND IT WAS I THOUGHT I'D BE MORE PREPARED, BUT IT WAS MORE CHAOTIC. AND I LOVED THE CHALLENGE OF IT, BECAUSE WHEN THESE KIDS WANT TO DO SOMETHING, THEY WILL TELL ME THEY WANT TO DO IT AND I WILL FIGURE IT OUT FOR THEM. SOMETIMES NOT AS FAST AS THEY ALWAYS WANT, BUT THAT JUST TELLS ME HOW MOTIVATED THEY ARE.

SO THEY SPENT ALL THEIR SATURDAYS AND WE WENT TO DALLAS DECEMBER 11TH THROUGH THE 13TH AND COMPETE AT THE STATE LEVEL. AND I'M GOING TO GO ON.

JUST YOU EVER HAVE THOSE STORIES WHERE LIKE, JUST THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE TO HAPPEN FOR YOU TO KIND OF KEEP MOVING FORWARD SOMETIMES THAT HAPPENED TO US AT OUR COMPETITION AT STATE LEVEL.

SO WITH THAT, THE TOP 11 ROBOTS THAT COMPETE ON THE FIELD, THEY ADVANCE AUTOMATICALLY BASED OFF POINT SCORING ON THE FIELD.

THE 12TH ROBOT GETS PICKED BASED OFF THE BEST ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK OUT OF THE REMAINING.

WE WERE THAT SELECTION. BECAUSE OUR NOTEBOOK WAS THE BEST OF THE REMAINING TEAMS WE GOT TO COMPETE IN THE WILD CARD ROUND IN THAT WILD CARD ROUND.

RIGHT BEFORE THAT, WE WERE ACTUALLY GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE ONE PRACTICE ROUND BECAUSE THEY NEEDED JUST A DUMMY DRIVER TO KEEP THE FIELD EVEN FOR THE OTHER TEAMS. LAURA HERE WAS OUR DRIVER THAT GOT TO DO THAT. SO SHE GOT TO PRACTICE RIGHT BEFORE THE WILD CARD ROUND.

AND WITH THAT WE WON BY FIVE POINTS, WHICH IS SCORING ONE MORE OBJECT THAN THE OTHER TEAM WHICH ADVANCED US TO THE FINALS OR THE SEMIFINALS TO COMPETE.

WE WON TWO AWARDS. WE GOT THIRD PLACE FOR OUR VIDEO DESIGN AWARD, CREATED BY NIKO AND KIROV AND OUR MARKETING TEAM DOWN THERE.

WE HAD OVER 260 STUDENTS COMPETE IN NINE DIFFERENT EVENTS AT OUR DISTRICT MEET, AND OUR UIL EVENTS INCLUDE CHESS, PUZZLES, CREATIVE WRITING, MAPS, GRAPHS AND CHARTS, MUSIC, MEMORY, NUMBER SENSE, ORAL READING, READING, WRITING, SPELLING, AND STORYTELLING.
