ANOTHER ONE IS THE EXTENSION OF THE PEDESTRIAN PATH THAT GOES IN FRONT OF CYPRESS RIGHT NOW, ALL THE WAY TO THE OR PARDON ME, IN FRONT OF SYCAMORE ALL THE WAY TO THE CYPRESS CAMPUS. ALSO INCLUDED IS PLANNING AND DESIGN FOR EXPANSION AND WIDENING OF SAWYER RANCH ROAD, AND ALSO A LOOK AT DARDEN HILL FROM SAWYER RANCH ALL THE WAY TO 150. MY ASK TONIGHT IS TO BEGIN THE CONVERSATION WITH THE BOARD ABOUT MAKING THE HIGH SCHOOL A PHONE FREE ENVIRONMENT FROM BELL TO BELL. THAT'S RIGHT. HERE'S JUST A FEW QUICK STATISTICS FROM THE NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION. 72% OF HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS REPORT CELL PHONES ARE A MAJOR DISTRACTION IN THE CLASSROOM. 83% OF TEACHERS SUPPORT AN ALL DAY PHONE FREE POLICY. STUDENTS NOT USING THEIR PHONES WROTE DOWN 62%. MORE INFORMATION. 35% OF TEENS ADMIT TO USING THEIR CELL PHONE TO CHEAT, AND A THIRD OF ALL TEENS REPORTED THAT THEY HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO PORNOGRAPHY DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. RATES OF LONELINESS HAVE DOUBLED. RATES OF ANXIETY ARE UP 134%, DEPRESSION 106%, AND IT'S UNDENIABLE THAT MUCH OF THIS IS RELATED TO PHONES. RECENT RESEARCH FROM JONATHAN HAIDT IN HIS BOOK THE ANXIOUS GENERATION HAS MUCH INFORMATION FROM THIS, AND I EXPECT SOME OF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THIS BOOK AND PROBABLY HAVE READ IT. THE TEAM SORT OF FELT LIKE WE WERE DUPLICATING THE EFFORTS OF OUR FABULOUS ART TEACHERS, SO WE WANTED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT, AND AFTER A LOT OF BRAINSTORMING WITH KELLY RAYMOND AND THE PTA BOARD, STEAM APPRECIATION WAS BORN. WE CREATED THIS PROGRAM TO ENHANCE WHAT OUR TEACHERS ARE DOING IN SCIENCE, AND WE ARE, AND WE WERE CHALLENGED TO FOCUS ON TEKS AND PROVIDE AS MUCH HANDS ON ACTIVITY AS POSSIBLE. THIS FALL, WE FOCUSED OUR EFFORTS ON ENGINEERING. WE FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN TO THINK LIKE ENGINEERS TO DESIGN, BUILD, TEST AND REPEAT. ENGINEERS WORK IN GROUPS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS. SO COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK WERE UNDERLYING LESSONS. IN OUR PARENT LED PROGRAM, THE STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT FORCE, PUSH, PULL, AND THE ULTIMATE FORCE OF GRAVITY. THEY TESTED WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY APPLY DIFFERENT FORCES AS THEY ATTEMPT TO GET THE BALLS INTO CUPS. THEY ALSO CREATED MARBLE RUNS. STUDENTS DECIDED ON A GOAL, DESIGNED AND PLANNED, AND THEN BUILT THEIR MARBLE RUN. AS THEY RAISED THEIR MARBLES, THEY NOTICED WHAT WORKED, WHAT DIFFERENCE, AND THEY ADAPTED THEIR RUNS. WE TOOK THE LESSON MODEL FROM THE ART APPRECIATION, PROVIDING A VIDEO AND ACTIVITY SUPPORTED BY CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS. THE VIDEO EXPLAINS THE CONCEPT AND THE LESSON ACTIVITY. WE FEEL THE VIDEO IS VERY IMPORTANT. IT ENSURES THAT THE LESSONS ARE CLEAR AND CONSISTENT IN ALL CLASSROOMS. WE PROVIDE EACH CLASSROOM WITH THE MATERIALS THEY NEED FOR THE ACTIVITIES. WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES PER GRADE LEVEL. OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE FIVE VOLUNTEERS PER CLASSROOM, SO WE ARE LOOKING AT UP TO 30 VOLUNTEERS AT A TIME. IT'S QUITE AN UNDERTAKING TO HAVE ALL THE SUPPLIES AND VOLUNTEERS FOR A WHOLE GRADE LEVEL READY TO GO AT ONCE. TO SUPPORT OUR VOLUNTEERS, WE OFFER A TRAINING THE FRIDAY BEFORE THE EVENT. WE ALSO PROVIDE A ONE PAGER SO THAT VOLUNTEERS WHO COULD NOT ATTEND THE TRAINING HAVE A QUICK REFERENCE AND UNDERSTAND HOW WE NEED THEM TO ASSIST THE STUDENTS. THIS YEAR WE HAD 45 VOLUNTEERS SIGN UP, 19 FOR THE TRAINING, SO WE HAD 145 SLOTS OPEN, AND WE WERE ABLE TO FILL 57% OF THOSE SLOTS. WE ONLY HAD ONE CLASS WITH ALL FIVE VOLUNTEERS, SO THERE WAS A LOT OF HUSTLING. AS THIS PROGRAM MATURES OVER TIME, OUR PLAN IS TO HAVE VOLUNTEERS CREATE ONE PROGRAM AND THEN TO HAVE A VENDOR COME IN AND RUN ANOTHER LESSON. AS YOU CAN SEE, IT'S CHALLENGING FOR US TO GET THE AMOUNT OF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, AND I ALSO WANT TO PROTECT THE VOLUNTEERS FROM BURNOUT AS IT'S A BIG EFFORT TO DEVELOP THE IDEA, MAKE SURE IT MEETS TEKS, WRITE A SCRIPT, CREATE A VIDEO, PREPARE ALL THE MATERIALS, AND TRAIN THE VOLUNTEERS. THE VERY FIRST PRE-K CLASS ONE OF THE KIDS SET UP LIKE THAT AND MADE THIS GIGANTIC JUMP I HAD NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT. WE COULD NEVER HAVE DONE SOMETHING LIKE THAT WITH ONE OF THOSE BASIC SETS. SO IT WAS JUST IT WAS A REALLY COOL PROCESS WATCHING THESE KIDS JUST COMPLETELY ENGAGE. WE HAD A NUMBER OF THE TEACHERS AFTERWARDS ASKED IF THEY COULD JUST USE THEM FOR LIKE THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL OR A HOLIDAY. THEY COULD JUST DO IT AS A FUN ACTIVITY OR JUST HAVE SOMETHING EXTRA. SO EVEN BEYOND THE STEAM PROGRAM, THEY'RE GETTING THE EXTRA USE OUT OF IT AND THE SCIENCE ROOM. HELLO, I'M ALICIA LEMON, I AM ON THE PTA FOR CYPRESS SPRINGS FOR ENRICHMENT, AND I GOT TO HAVE THE PLEASURE TO BE WITH SCIENCE MILL FOR THE THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE CLASSES, AND THEY HAD BROUGHT IN THE SUPPLIES OF, LIKE, PIPE CLEANERS, TWO WASHERS, A DIXIE CUP AND SOME STRAWS AND A STRING. THE BEST PART WAS WORKING AS A TEAM AND DISCOVERING NEW WAYS TO IMPROVE OUR DESIGN. THEY ALSO HAD TO DESIGN EITHER THEIR MARBLE RUN OR THEIR ZIPLINE PASSENGER AND REALLY DECIDE ON DETERMINE HOW IT WAS GOING TO WORK AND MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AND SO THEY REALLY WERE HITTING ALL OF THESE ENGINEERING TEKS WITH BOTH ACTIVITIES K THROUGH FIVE, WHICH WAS GREAT TO SEE, AND THEN OUR CLASSROOMS, TOO, A LOT OF THEM DID ACTIVITIES AFTERWARDS THAT REALLY HELPED THEM FOCUS ON THEIR WRITING END OF IT. ONE OF THE THINGS TO NOTE ON THAT IS IF WE AS A DISTRICT ADOPT AN HQIM THAT'S APPROVED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION. THERE IS FINANCES. $60 PER KID COMES WITH THAT CURRICULUM. OKAY. NOTHING THAT OUR DISTRICT IS LOOKING INTO DOING AT THIS TIME, BUT IT WAS THE ASSEMBLY THAT WE WENT TO AND THEN HE LIKE, STOOD UP THERE AND LISTENED TO SOME VERY HARD QUESTIONS, AND HE DID A VERY GOOD JOB OF ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS. WE THEN IDENTIFIED OUR TOP THREE, WHICH WERE PER STUDENT ALLOTMENT, LOCAL CONTROL, AND UNFUNDED OR PARTIALLY FUNDED MANDATES. WE ASSIGNED ONE COMMITTEE MEMBER TO EACH PRIORITY, AND WE WERE EACH TASKED WITH RESEARCH AND GATHERING DATA ON EACH. OUR GOAL IS TO MEET WITH BOTH OF OUR STATE HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES, CARRIE ISAAC FOR D73 AND ERIN ZWIENER FOR D45. WE ARE HAPPY TO SAY WE DID MEET WITH CARRIE AND STAFF MEMBER OLIVIA BRECHT LAST WEEK, AND IT WAS A VERY PRODUCTIVE MEETING. THEY ALSO PARTICIPATED IN A HOLE IN ONE AND A PUTT FOR A PURPOSE. THAT WAS THE BOOTH I SOLD. I COULD HAVE DONE BETTER. I THINK I ONLY SOLD LIKE $1,400 IN PUTT FOR A PURPOSE, BUT THEY HAD FUN. SO WE TAKE YOUR EXISTING CAMPUS AND LOOK AT ALL THE SPACES THAT YOU CURRENTLY HAVE AND WHAT THOSE THE SIZES OF THOSE SPACES, AND THEN WE ALSO TAKE A TEAM TO YOUR CAMPUS, AND WE WERE ABLE TO WALK IT AND MAKE SURE THAT THOSE SPACES THAT ARE LABELED ON THE FLOOR PLAN ARE ACTUALLY WHAT THEY'RE BEING USED AS, BECAUSE AN EXISTING CAMPUS, THEY TEND TO GET CHANGED TO WHATEVER THEY NEED TO BE. SO WE TOOK THIS EXERCISE AND LOOKED AT ALL THE DIFFERENT SPACES THAT YOU HAD AND HOW YOU WERE USING THEM, AND THEN WE WERE ABLE TO USE THOSE SPACES AND THIS PLAN TO START FORMING HIGH SCHOOL NUMBER TWO. SO TO DO THAT WE HAVE TO ONE DISCUSS THOSE EXISTING SPACES WITH YOUR ADMIN AND HOW THEY'RE BEING USED AND WHAT SPACES YOU NEED IN ADDITION TO THAT, BUT WE ALSO NEED TO WORK THROUGH THE NEW TEA GUIDELINES SO THAT DICTATES THE NEW SIZES OF THOSE SPACES, AND THOSE HAVE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS. SO WE HAD TO MAKE SOME OF THOSE SPACES LARGER THAN THEY PREVIOUSLY HAVE BEEN. SO THAT IS AN EXERCISE THAT WE HAD TO GO THROUGH WITH YOUR DISTRICT AND FIGURE OUT WHAT EACH OF THOSE SPACES NEED TO BE AND WHERE THEY NEED TO BE. THIS IS AN EVER EVOLVING PIECE OF OUR PROCESS. SO AS WE CONTINUE TO DISCUSS THIS WITH THE USERS, WE KIND OF ARE ABLE TO SHIFT AROUND THOSE SPACES AND THE SIZES OF THOSE SPACES BASED ON WHAT THEY REALLY NEED AS WELL. WE KNOW THAT THERE'S IMPROVEMENTS THAT ARE ON THE CURRENT HAYS COUNTY BOND FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO DARDEN HILL FOR THIS PROJECT, WE ABSOLUTELY NEED THAT. THAT ROAD WIDENED. SURE, THIS PROJECT COULD SURVIVE FOR A WHILE WITHOUT THAT, BUT IT IS CERTAINLY NEEDED FOR THE LONG TERM. AT THIS POINT, WE ARE CONDUCTING A TRAFFIC IMPACT ANALYSIS ON COUNTS THAT ARE GOING TO AND FROM THAT SITE. WE WAITED FOR A WHILE UNTIL SCHOOL WAS BACK IN SESSION TO START GETTING THOSE COUNTS. OBVIOUSLY, THAT'S GOING TO INCREASE IN THE ENGINEER WHO PUTS THAT STUDY TOGETHER, PUTS THOSE FACTORS INTO IT. SO WE KIND OF KNEW WHERE THAT HAD TO GO, BUT WORKING THROUGH IT WITH THE DISTRICT AND FIGURING OUT WHERE THE FIELDS GO, WHERE THE TENNIS COURT GOES, YOU KNOW, WHERE THE ATHLETICS NEEDS TO BE IN POSITIONING TO THOSE EVENTS, HOW YOU NEED TO SEPARATE, YOU KNOW, YOUR EVENT TRAFFIC AND YOUR SCHOOL TRAFFIC. YOU KNOW, THAT'S ALL BEEN THOUGHT THROUGH AND GOTTEN ONTO THIS. OR I GUESS THAT'S WEST ON THE SITE IS THE STUDENT PARKING LOT, AND THEN THEY'LL ENTER THROUGH A PROMENADE INTO THE CAFETERIA LIBRARY, MEDIA CENTER WITH A DEDICATED STUDENT ENTRY, AND THEN YOU COME AROUND TO THE SOUTH OF THE BUILDING WHERE THE FOOTBALL FIELD IS. THAT'S WHERE THE GYM AND AUDITORIUM LOBBIES ARE, AND THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGER DESIGN CHANGES THAT WE MADE DURING THIS PROCESS, AS WE EVOLVED WITH THE FEEDBACK, THERE'S NOW A SINGLE PLAZA THAT SERVES BOTH THE COMPETITION GYM AND THE AUDITORIUM. RIGHT? SO THERE'S THIS REALLY COOL OPPORTUNITY TO DO AN EVENT PLAZA THERE, RIGHT IN THE CENTER, AND THAT TIES INTO THE MAJOR THRUST OF THE PROJECT, WHICH IS THE COURTYARD WITH THE BUILDING SURROUNDING THE ENTIRE COURTYARD THAT IS CONNECTED TO THAT EVENT PLAZA. SO, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THINGS GO INTO THIS, RIGHT? AND I'M SURE THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT STILL HAVE TO GO INTO THIS, BUT AGAIN, WE'RE LANDING ON A REALLY GOOD SITE PLAN FROM A TRAFFIC FLOW, FROM A SORT OF SEPARATION OF MAJOR USERS THAT COME TO THE BUILDING, EITHER THEY COME TO THE BUILDING ALL DAY OR THEY COME IN THE EVENING. THAT'S ALL BEEN SORT OF PUSHED THROUGH AND THOUGHT ABOUT. SO WHEN WE LOOK AT THE ACTUAL PROJECT OR THE ACTUAL FLOOR PLAN, THE ORANGE IS THE ADMINISTRATION. SO THAT INDICATES WHERE THE FRONT ENTRY IS. THE STUDENT ENTRY THAT I SPOKE ABOUT ON THE SITE IS THE CAFETERIA AND THE YELLOW IS THE MEDIA CENTER. SO STAYING TRUE TO THE CONCEPT THAT WE PULLED OUT OF THE LAUNCH WITH THE STUDENT UNION, HAVING THOSE TWO SPACES, RIGHT WHERE THE STUDENT ENTRY IS, IS A BIG PLUS, AND THEN THEY FRONT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COURTYARD OR THE OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACE. PART OF OUR BIG CONVERSATIONS WITH SAFETY AND SECURITY WAS HOW TO SECURE SORT OF THAT ATHLETICS BUILDING. RIGHT. SO WHAT WE'VE DONE IS WE'VE SEPARATED IT INTO ITS OWN BUILDING SO IT CAN ACTUALLY OPERATE FOR VISITING TEAMS THAT COME IN AND PREVENT WHAT'S THE RIGHT WORD?
