THEY LEAVE FOR CROSS-COUNTRY MEETS, I DON'T KNOW, WE'VE BEEN AT THE BUS AT LIKE 05:30 A.M. ON SATURDAY MORNINGS. MADDIE, AT THE END, SHE IS ALSO A VARSITY CHEERLEADER, SO SHE GETS TO DO FOOTBALL THE NIGHT BEFORE AND THEN SHOW UP AND RUN THE NEXT DAY. IT'S A LOT OF HARD WORK TO MAKE IT TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND CROSS-COUNTRY. OUR DISTRICT IS HIGHLY COMPETITIVE. IT'S OUR SECOND YEAR IN 6A. AT THE DISTRICT MEET, ONLY THREE TEAMS QUALIFY FOR THE REGIONAL MEET, AND WE'D PLAY SECOND AT DISTRICT THIS YEAR. THEN OUR REGIONAL MEET IS DOWN IN CORPUS CHRISTI, AND SO WE GET A RUN DOWN THERE AND THE HUMIDITY THIS YEAR, IT WAS 20 MILE/HOUR WINDS, 80 DEGREES, SO SUPER FUN. ONLY FOUR TEAMS FROM EACH REGION QUALIFY FOR THE STATE MEET AND WE PLAY SECOND AT REGIONALS THIS YEAR, WHICH WAS HUGE. IT'S ALL THE SAN ANTONIO TEAMS, IT'S ALL THE VALLEY SCHOOLS AND AUSTIN SCHOOLS. THAT WAS I THINK, ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS SEASON. THEN I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU CAUGHT WHAT MADDIE SAID, BUT THIS IS A 10TH YEAR IN A ROW THAT THE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM HAS QUALIFIED FOR STATE, WHICH IS A HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT,10 YEARS IN A ROW. THE GIRLS KNEW THAT GOING INTO THIS SEASON, THEY KNEW THAT THEY WERE ON THE 10TH YEAR AND THEY KNEW THEY WANTED TO BE THE TEAM THAT QUALIFIED FOR THOSE 10 TIMES IN A ROW. THEY WORK SO INCREDIBLY HARD, NOT ONLY IN ATHLETICS, BUT ALSO STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM. THESE KIDS IN FRONT OF YOU, A COUPLE OF THEM I DIDN'T HAVE ALL THEIR GPA, BUT OVER 101 GPA AMONG THESE KIDS, THEY'RE IN HONORS, AP CLASSES, TOP OF THEIR CLASS. AGAIN, NOT ONLY GREAT ATHLETES, BUT ALSO GREAT STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM. I THINK A COUPLE OF THEM ARE GOING TO SAY THEIR FAVORITE MEMORIES FROM CROSS-COUNTRY. I'LL LET THE SENIORS GO AHEAD. TO GET STARTED, LET'S TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR WHY EACH YEAR WE ADMINISTER AN ASSESSMENT CALLED THE MEASURABLE RESULTS ASSESSMENT AND THAT'S THROUGH LEADER IN ME. FROM THAT WE ARE ASSESSED ON OUR CULTURE, ACADEMICS, AND LEADERSHIP AND SO WE OFFER THE SURVEY OUT TO ALL FAMILIES AND WE SET TARGET GOALS FOR THAT. THIS YEAR WE HAD 132 FAMILIES PARTICIPATE, ACTUALLY, THAT WAS LAST SPRING, PARTICIPATE IN THAT, AND THEN OUR FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS, AS WELL AS ALL STAFF PARTICIPATE IN THIS. THIS IS A LITTLE SNIPPET FROM THE FAMILY ENGAGEMENT PORTION OF THE SURVEY THAT WE DECIDED WAS A TARGET AREA FOR IMPROVEMENT ON OUR CAMPUS. WE TOOK THAT PIECE AND WE CAST A VISION. HOW ARE WE GOING TO TARGET THAT? HOW ARE WE GOING TO IMPROVE ENGAGEMENT? THOSE OF YOU THAT SEE OUR SOCIAL MEDIA, WE ARE NOT LACKING IN PARENT PARTICIPATION BY ANY MEANS, BUT WE'RE LOOKING MORE AT THE DEEP ENGAGEMENT. THIS IS A LADDER OF PARENT ENGAGEMENT. THIS IS OFFERED FROM FRANKLIN COVEY. THIS LADDER WHERE WE ARE WHEN WE SELF REFLECT IS ON PRESENT. OUR FAMILIES ARE IN THE CLASSROOMS, THEY COME TO CONFERENCES, THEY SEND IN WHAT THEY NEED, THEY PARTICIPATE, THEY VOLUNTEER. BUT WHAT WE WANT TO SEE FROM OUR FAMILIES IS THE FULLY ENGAGED WHERE THEY ARE SUPPORTING THE LEARNING ALONGSIDE US FOR THEIR CHILD'S GROWTH AND THEIR LEADING LEARNING. THAT'S WHY THIS IS REALLY FABULOUS AND YOU'RE GOING TO LEARN ABOUT THIS PROCESS IN A LITTLE BIT. AFTER WE SET OUR VISION, WE CREATED A GOAL AND THIS IS OUR CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PLAN, WHICH YOU GUYS KNOW, FAMILY ENGAGEMENT AS PART OF OUR DISTRICT IMPROVEMENT PLAN. WE NARROWED IT DOWN AND WE'RE A LITTLE BIT MORE SPECIFIC THAT WE WANTED TO INCREASE OUR FAMILY ENGAGEMENT WITH DECISION-MAKING, ADDITIONAL TRAINING, AND RESOURCES SO THAT WE FOSTER THAT SENSE OF BELONGING WITH OUR FAMILIES IN AN EFFORT TO IMPROVE OUR MRAS SCORE. ONE OF THE STRATEGIES IS THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO TRAIN ALL OF OUR FAMILIES IN THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE FAMILIES AND THEN WHEN WE DO CAMPUS EVENTS, REALLY STRUCTURING THEM TO WHERE STAKEHOLDERS ARE INVOLVED IN IT SO THEY'RE NOT JUST IN ATTENDANCE. WHEN I SHOW YOU, THESE ARE THE PARTICIPANT GUIDES AND THIS IS THE TRAINING THAT WE ACTUALLY DELIVER TO THE FAMILIES THAT ATTEND. WE JUST NEED IT TO CERTIFY THOSE EFFECTIVE FAMILY TRAINERS. WE NEEDED TO ORGANIZE THE TRAINING SESSIONS, MARKET THE TRAINING SO THAT PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO COME AND THEN HOSTS THE SESSIONS. A PART OF THAT WAS OUR SUMMER TRAINING. WE ACTUALLY CAME IN ALL OF US TRAINERS FOR FOUR-AND-A-HALF HOURS AND WE WORKED THROUGH THE CONTENT. THAT WAS HOW AND WHAT FRANKLIN COVEY WAS WANTING TO DELIVER TO THE PARENTS AND TO THEIR FAMILIES. HOW ARE WE GOING TO HELP FAMILIES BECOME MORE ENGAGED IN THEIR LEARNING? THEN WE CAME BACK AND WE DID A TWO-HOUR SESSION ON PRESENTATION STRATEGIES. AS WE'RE STANDING UP AND WE ARE PRESENTING TO THE FAMILIES, HOW ARE WE GOING TO BE ACTIVELY ENGAGING THEM TO WHERE THEY'RE BEST RECEIVING THAT CONTENT? THEN EACH OF US CAME BACK AND WE PRESENTED TO EACH OTHER AND DID A TEACH BACK FOR 30 MINUTES AND GAVE EACH OTHER FEEDBACK. IT WAS A PROCESS THIS SUMMER TO GET TRAINED. I'M REALLY PROUD THAT WE ALL DID THIS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF ALL OF OUR FAMILIES AT CYPRUS. THEN OUR PLANNING WE HAD TO COME UP WITH HOW ARE WE WANTING TO ROLL THIS OUT THAT IT WOULD BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE TO OUR FAMILY MEMBERS. WE DECIDED ON THREE SESSIONS, IF YOU WILL, BUT WE OFFERED THEM TWICE A DAY, WE WANTED TO REACH THE MAJORITY OF OUR FAMILIES. WE KNOW THAT SOME FAMILIES CAN COME DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, SO WE OFFERED A MORNING SESSION, BUT THEN WE ALSO STAYED LATE. THESE LADIES INCLUDED 5:45-8:00 PM SO THAT WE CAN OFFER THAT FOR OUR WORKING PARENTS AS WELL. THEN MARKETING, THIS WAS PROBABLY THE MOST FUN BECAUSE WE HAD TO COME UP WITH ENGAGING WAYS IN WHICH THE PARENTS WERE DRAWN IN. WE'RE STILL WORKING ON THAT. BUT WE HAVE LITERS AND LATTE SO WE OFFERED THIS IN THE MORNING, WE PROVIDED COFFEE, AND WE MARKETED ON SOCIAL MEDIA. THEN WE ALSO CAME UP WITH THE LEADER NEED DATE NIGHT, NOT YOUR TRADITIONAL DATE NIGHT, BUT A DATE NIGHT WHERE YOU CAN STILL COME WITH YOUR SPOUSE AND LEARN HOW TO HELP LEAD YOUR FAMILY. >> THEN WE MOVED IN TO THE FIRST SESSION. THE FIRST SESSION WE WENT OVER THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY AND GOING OVER THE COMMON CHALLENGES AND THE SOLUTIONS FOR WHAT ALL FAMILIES GO UP AGAINST, THE OBSTACLES. THOSE FAMILIES PURPOSES TYPICALLY ENCOMPASS YOUR LIVING, YOUR LOVING, YOUR LEARNING, YOUR LEAVING A LEGACY AND THOSE ARE ALL PARTS OF THE BODY, HEART, MIND, AND SPIRIT. WE ALSO THEN INTEGRATED THAT INTO THE SEVEN HABITS. WE HAD A FABULOUS EXAMPLE OF A SODA BOTTLE VERSUS A WATER AND WHEN YOU SHAKE THOSE UP, WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM? ARE WE BEING PROACTIVE? ARE WE BEING REACTIVE? WHEN YOU DECIPHER THAT DOWN, THEN YOU REALLY HAVE TO THINK ABOUT WHAT WE'RE TEACHING THE KIDS. MEANING, ARE YOU PAUSING? ARE YOU THINKING? THEN ARE YOU CHOOSING HOW YOU RESPOND? THESE ARE NOT JUST ADULT ATTRIBUTES. IT'S BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH THIS, HOW THIS INCORPORATES INTO OUR KIDS AND THEIR EVERYDAY LEARNING. WE THEN FOCUSED ON THIS CIRCLE OF CONCERN AND THE CIRCLE OF INFLUENCES. BASICALLY YOU START WITH YOURSELF. THE PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING TO BE REVIEWING THESE APPLICATIONS FOR THE GRANTS, THEIR WORK IS CUT OUT FOR THEM, AND SO THEY'RE LOOKING FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO JOIN THE FOUNDATION. THEY'RE LOOKING FOR SPONSORSHIPS BECAUSE THEY REALLY WOULD HATE TO TELL ANY TEACHER THAT'S REACHING OUT FOR ONE OF THOSE GRANTS THE WORD NO, BECAUSE IT'S JUST GREAT THINGS THAT THEY'VE DONE. THAT'S LATEST ON THE GRANT. PTA IS MY LAST ONE AND WE MET TODAY. THEY ACTUALLY HAD THEIR FIRST LEADERSHIP DINNER TOGETHER WHERE THEY BROUGHT ALL OF THE CAMPUS LEADERS AT PTA TOGETHER FOR ONE NIGHT AND GOT TO NETWORK. IT WAS SPONSORED BY THE DOROTHY BUTLER LAW FIRM. SHE PICKED UP THE TAB FOR THAT DINNER AND THEY WERE VERY GRACIOUS ABOUT THAT. SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF IS THIS FRIDAY. WALNUT SPRINGS ELEMENTARY IS GETTING AN UPDATE TO THEIR LOUNGE, AND THAT WAS THE BRAG STORY. SOME OF THE PARENTS WALKED IN THERE AND SAID IT NEEDED TO BE SPRUCED UP A LITTLE BIT, SO THEY'RE BUSY GETTING TO WORK ON THAT ONE. NOVEMBER IS GOLDEN APPLE AWARD FOR THE COUNCIL. THE GOAL THERE IS TO GET 100% OF THE STAFF AT CAMPUS TO JOIN PTA. A LOT OF THE PRINCIPLES ARE REALLY WORKING WITH THEIR STAFF TO GET THAT DONE AND ALSO GETTING THE WORD OUT TO THEIR PARENTS TO CONTINUE TO JOIN AS WELL. REFLECTIONS PROGRAM HAS KICKED OFF AND WE'RE ALSO GOING TO BE DOING A SPELLING BEE. THERE HAS BEEN AN INTEREST IN A LOT OF OUR CAMPUSES THAT WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE. WE KNOW THAT THE DISTRICT OWNS 155 ACRES AT DARDEN HILL OR YOUR MOST RECENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WAS BUILT, WHICH WILL BE THE FUTURE SITE OF YOUR SECOND HIGH SCHOOL. TIME WE'RE REALLY GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE OVERALL TIMELINE AND THERE'S A LOT OF INFORMATION ON THIS SLIDE, BUT I'M GOING TO TRY TO CONDENSE IT DOWN AS EASILY AS I CAN. WHEN WE GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS, THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEETINGS. DEPENDING ON THE COMMUNITY THAT WE'RE WORKING WITH, SOMETIMES THEY WANT A LARGE SCALE GROUP MEETINGS AND SOMETIMES THEY WANT TO CONVINCE THEM. IN SOME CASES THEY WANT BOTH, WE'RE HERE IN NOVEMBER. WE WILL START WITH WHAT WE CALL ACTUALLY LATER THIS WEEK A VLK CURATION MEETING WHICH WILL BE WITH DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION. THAT IS REALLY TO TALK ABOUT THE ONGOING PEDAGOGIES OF THE EDUCATIONAL FOCUS OF THE DISTRICT. NOT THAT THAT'S GOING TO STAY THE SAME, BUT IT REALLY SETS THE TONE SO THAT WHEN WE GET IN FRONT OF THE COMMUNITY, WE'RE SPEAKING THE SAME LANGUAGE AND WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT THE FEEDBACK THAT WE'RE GETTING THAT WERE ALSO FEEDING THAT BACK TO THE DISTRICTS SO THAT BASICALLY WE'RE CO-WEAVING THE TWO TOGETHER. IN JANUARY, WE'RE GOING TO START WITH A COUPLE OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH MEETINGS. NOW, THOSE MEETINGS WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THE PLATFORM FOR THAT WILL BE STRUCTURED IN THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A NUMBER OF ITEMS THAT WE WANT TO DISCUSS. BUT IT'S ALSO GOING TO GIVE A PLATFORM FOR CITIZENS TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK. NOW WHETHER THAT'S THROUGH A NOTEPAD SYSTEM OR A QUESTION AND ANSWER, DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH TIME WE HAVE, WE'RE GOING TO GIVE INDIVIDUALS THE TIME FOR THEM, FOR US TO HEAR WHAT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THEM. ONCE WE GO THROUGH THAT PROCESS, YOU'LL SEE THERE ARE THREE LINES THERE FOR VLK LAUNCH. ADVISORY MEETING, WHICH I'LL TOUCH ON HERE IN JUST A MINUTE. AS YOU CAN SEE THE TIMELINE IT OVERLAYS VERY WELL WITH YOUR LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE, YOUR STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE, AND THEN AS YOU MOVE FORWARD SHOULD THE DISTRICT DECIDE TO POTENTIAL BOND PLANNING. THEN AT THE END, AGAIN, THE OVERALL TIMELINE FOR A HIGH SCHOOL IS ROUGHLY A YEAR. THIS IS A LITTLE LONGER THAN THAT, BUT WE'RE ALSO INTEGRATING SOME MORE COMMUNITY INPUT. AGAIN, WE'RE ROUGHLY AT ABOUT A YEAR'S TIME FRAME FOR ACTUAL PRODUCTION OF THE PROJECT. WE'VE TALKED ABOUT VERY BRIEFLY, A PHASED OPENINGS. THIS WOULD ALLOW FOR A PHASED OPENING IN FALL OF 27 THAT WOULDN'T COMPLETE THE ENTIRETY OF THE PROJECT. TYPICALLY, WE'RE LOOKING AT AROUND A 30 MONTH RIGHT NOW IN THIS ENVIRONMENT, WE'RE LOOKING AT ABOUT A 30 MONTH CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE ON A PROJECT OF THIS SIZE. I'M SEEING THAT COME DOWN A LITTLE BIT, BUT I CAN'T FORESEE THE FUTURE YET WITH OUR MARKET. COMMUNITY INPUT AND WHY DOES IT MATTER? AGAIN, WHEN WE MET WITH THE GROUP, WHEN WE WERE ABLE TO INTERVIEW WITH THE COMMITTEE, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE SAID WAS VLK REALLY STANDS BY COMMUNITY INPUT. WE FIND THAT THE PROJECTS THAT GO THROUGH THIS EFFORT OFTEN, IF NOT ALWAYS COME OUT WITH A BETTER OUTCOME BECAUSE NOT EVERYBODY IS GOING TO GET EVERYTHING THEY WANT, BUT EVERYBODY IS GOING TO GET SOMETHING THEY WANT. THROUGH OUR PROCESS THAT'S BECOME VERY POSITIVE. REGARDLESS, SOMETIMES IT'S NOT ONLY A NEW FACILITIES BUT ALSO ON SIGNIFICANT RENOVATIONS. WE GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS AS WELL. WHAT THAT ALLOWS IS THAT IT ESTABLISHES A LEVEL OF TRUST BETWEEN THE ARCHITECTS. IT'S NOT THE ARCHITECTS DICTATING WHAT WE FEEL IS RIGHT FOR YOUR COMMUNITY OR GETTING FEEDBACK AND INTEGRATING THAT INTO THE DESIGN. WE WANT TO GET THE FEEDBACK SO THAT WE ENSURE THAT THOSE ARE MET. SOME OF THE GOALS OF THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH MEETING WILL BE TO INFORM THE COMMUNITIES SUCH AS GROWTH WITHIN DRIPPING SPRINGS SO THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THE FACTS. THEY UNDERSTAND THAT DEMOGRAPHIC PROJECTIONS JUST AS YOU GUYS SEE THEM ON A TYPICAL BASIS. EXAMPLES OF SIMILAR PROJECTS AND WE WANT TO ESTABLISH WHAT THOSE PROJECT PARAMETERS ARE SO THAT THEY UNDERSTAND HOW LARGE IS THIS BUILDING BUILT FOR? HOW LONG WILL THAT SUSTAIN THE GROWTH WITHIN DRIPPING SPRINGS? THOSE TYPES OF THINGS. WE'LL ESTABLISH COMMUNITY PRIORITIES SUCH AS HONORING THE HISTORY OF DRIPPING SPRINGS. THAT WILL BE A REALLY BIG TOPIC. WE WANT TO HEAR WHAT IS VALUABLE, WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO THOSE THAT HAVE LIVED IN THIS COMMUNITY FOR A VERY LONG TIME. AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE'RE BUILDING A FACILITY THAT WILL EDUCATE STUDENTS FOR OVER 50 YEARS. WHAT DOES THAT FACILITY LOOK LIKE? IT MAY NOT LOOK LIKE THE BUILDINGS THAT WE BUILD TODAY. WE WANT THEM TO THINK ABOUT WHAT COULD THAT LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE. SO WE HAVE LARGE SCALE COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND THEN WHAT WE WOULD CALL A PROJECT ADVISORY TEAM. A PROJECT ADVISORY TEAM IS ESTABLISHED AT THE ONSET OF THE PROJECT, AND ARE PUT AT THE VERY BOTTOM, I'LL START WITH THIS, THE MEMBERS REMAIN ON THE TEAM FOR THE ENTIRETY OF THE PROJECT. IT'S A GROUP THAT WE TYPICALLY SEE OF 8-20 MEMBERS, INCLUDING STUDENTS, TEACHERS, PARENTS, MEMBERS OF THE VLK TEAM, DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION. THEY ARE THERE AS LIAISONS, IF YOU WILL, TO ENSURE THAT THE INFORMATION THAT WAS PUSHED OUT AT THE ONSET OF OUR COMMUNITY MEETINGS ARE CARRIED THROUGH ALL THE WAY THROUGH DESIGN AND ALL THE WAY THROUGH CONSTRUCTION, THEY ARE AT AT CERTAIN MILESTONES THERE DURING CONSTRUCTION, LISTENING TO THE CONTRACTORS, BEING A NUMBER OF EYES ON THE PROJECT.
